- Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Announces Poster Contest to Support Emerging Artists

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) has just announced plans to host a commemorative poster design competition to showcase emerging artists and develop theme art for its 35th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), set for September 21-24, 2005, in Washington, D.C.

The ALC (ALC) is a national forum concerning issues facing African Americans and other minority populations. Twenty thousand people consisting of Members of Congress, local and national policymakers, business and community leaders, students and young professionals, and the general public convene over a period of four days to participate in public policy discussions and networking activities.

The theme for this year’s conference is Unity…Power…Progress— a call to individuals and organizations to build coalitions around a common agenda that aims to advance the social, economic and political status of minority people. The artwork that best translates the theme into a visual form will bring national and potentially international exposure to the winning work, a unique opportunity for up and coming artists.

“We view the poster design competition as one of the numerous creative ways in which the Foundation can encourage and support the myriad talents within the black community while celebrating 35 years of bringing this powerful conference [ALC] to the public. One of our chief goals has always been to provide a platform for positive expression that reflects and reaffirms the lush history and continuing contributions of African Americans,” said Dr. Don I. Tharpe, CBCF’s President and CEO.

CBCF’s competition is open to emerging artists. The winner will attend the Annual Legislative Conference and receive a $2500 cash award. In addition, the winner’s artwork will be featured in the ALC Souvenir Journal and merchandised as a limited edition poster. The submission deadline is August 2, 2005.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is a non-profit educational, research and public policy institute founded in 1976. CBCF’s mission is to educate future leaders and promote key collaborations to effect positive and sustainable change in the African American community.
